The Goat is the emblem of that martial man, who wins a victory by the employment of policy rather than valor. It may betoken one that is willing to fare hard so he may be in high employment honored. The Leopard’s Head is said to represent a valiant warrior, who enterprises hazardous things, by force and courage.

The Anthony ancestors from England are the progenitors of many famous Anthony family members in the U.S. including:

Some of the following information about the Anthony family was taken from manuscripts and books written between 1812 and 1916. It was a huge undertaking for those authors to document the history of the Anthony family. One author, Charles L. Anthony, spent many years of his life researching his Anthony ancestors. As he states on page 13 of his manuscript, “Perplexity and toil beyond all calculation have discouraged my attempt. So much labor and correspondence, so many letters unanswered, unnoticed (there seems to be no remedy for such a disease), so many folios searched in vain, so much travel and expense of time and money to bring order out of this chaos, that it never would have been undertaken the second time by the same person, or I might change the “m” in the word “same” to “n” and say, it would never be undertaken the second time by any sane person“¹.

Unfortunately these books were written without source citations. Without evidence or citation, we cannot be sure all of the information about the early Anthony family is factual. That being said, our direct line starts with John Anthony who emmegrated to America in 1634.

John Anthony (William¹, Francis², Francis³, John⁴), born in Hempstead, London 1607². John Anthony came to America aboard the Hercules, April 16, 1634³. He died in 1675⁴. He married in 1640 Susanna Potter⁵. She was born1620 in Rhode Island⁶ and died in 1675⁷.

Abraham Anthony (William¹, Francis², Francis³, John⁴, John⁵), was born in Portsmouth, RI in 1650⁸. He died in Portsmouth on 10 Oct 1727⁹. He married in Portsmouth 26 Dec 1671 Alice Wodell¹⁰. She was born in Portsmouth 10 Feb 1650 the daughter of William and Mary Wodell¹¹. She died in Portsmouth in 1734¹².

William Anthony (William¹, Francis², Francis³, John⁴, John⁵, Abraham⁶), was born in Portsmouth, RI on 31 Oct 1675¹³. He died 28 Dec 1744¹⁴. He married in Portsmouth on 14 March 1694 Mary Coggeshall, born 18 Sep 1675, the daughter of John Coggeshall and Elizabeth Timberlake¹⁵. She died after 1739¹⁶.

Job Anthony (William¹, Francis², Francis³, John⁴, John⁵, Abraham⁶, William⁷), was born in Portsmouth, RI on 10 April 1714¹⁷. He died in Taunton, Mass. before 6 Jun 1797¹⁸. He married first Hannah Luther¹⁹; he married second Bethia Eddy²⁰; he married third on 11 Sept. 1794 Abigail Chase Bush²¹, a widow, and daughter of Nathan and Lydia Chase²².

Seth Anthony (William¹, Francis², Francis³, John⁴, John⁵, Abraham⁶, William⁷, Job⁸), was born in Swansea, Mass. ca 1750²³. He died 20 Sep 1827²⁴. He married in Taunton, Mass. on 22 June 1775  Charity Haskins²⁵. She was born in Taunton on 1 April 1754, daughter of Abiel Haskins and Elizabeth Richmond²⁶.

John Anthony (William¹, Francis², Francis³, John⁴, John⁵, Abraham⁶, William⁷, Job⁸, Seth⁹), was born 13 Nov. 1780 in Taunton, MA²⁷. He died 31 Jan. 1857 in Buffalo, Ill²⁸. He married in Blenheim, New York on 12 Nov. 1801 Abigail Soule²⁹. She was born 4 July 1782 in Tiverton, RI³⁰. She died on 12 July 1859 in Jackson, Iowa³¹. She was the daughter of Jacob Soule and Maribah Lewis³².

Sarah Jane Anthony Aplington (William¹, Francis², Francis³, John⁴, John⁵, Abraham⁶, William⁷, Job⁸, Seth⁹, John¹⁰), Sarah Jane Anthony, was born 1 Oct 1814 in Kortright, NY³³. She died 30 Dec 1884 in Norton KS³⁴. She married 16 May 1833, in Sanford, Broome County, NY, James Aplington³⁵. He was born 1812 in Deposit, NY³⁶, he died 15 Sep 1867, in Aplington, Iowa³⁷. He was the son of James Page Aplington and Catherine Dean³⁸.
