For over a century, genealogists have been researching Job Anthony’s family. He was married three times and was the father of no fewer than 10 children. But there is little supporting evidence of Job’s wives and children as described in a June 7, 1877 letter from John Gould Anthony to Job K. Anthony1, “Most of my efforts have been to work out the descendants of William, the grandson of John. He had fourteen children of whom only ten married, and I take each of these children as the head of a branch and I bring each down separately. Of Job’s branch, I have as yet scanty information and need your help. In order that you may do so, I send a statement of all that I now have. At my age, now 73 years, I may not live to complete it.” John Gould Anthony died four months later on October 16, 18772.

This document is an attempt to piece together all of the evidence and analysis from letters and manuscripts from Anthony family members, Friends records, probate records, and letters and evidence genealogists have gathered on the Job Anthony family. It took two years of painstaking research to come to the conclusion. A summary of my research process can be found here.

Job Anthony Will/Probate – signature page – 6 Jun 1797

Job Anthony, born 10 Apr 17143 was one of 14 children of William Anthony and Mary Coggeshall, and the great grandson of John Anthony, born in England, who came to America aboard the Hercules, April 16, 16344. He died in Taunton, Mass. before probate on  6 Jun 17975.

According to Charles L. Anthony, Job Anthony was married three times: 1) Hannah Luther, 2) Bethiah Eddy, and 3) Abigail Bush. This is confirmed by Job’s grandson, James H. Anthony in a May 2, 1877 letter to John Gould Anthony stating “my grandfather, Job, born 1714 – had 2 or 3 wives had 4 sons and 4 daughters”6.

There is plenty of evidence that Job and most of his family were Quakers. Job is listed in the Swansey Record of Friends as “ANTHONY Job, of William and Mary”7.

Job Anthony and his first wife, Hannah Luther

We find evidence that Job married first Hannah Luther at Swansea, 19 Nov 17338. Hannah is the daughter of John Luther and Judith Martin of Swansea, born 20 Feb 17189. There was one child born to that marriage. Job claims not to be the father of this child. Leslie L. Luther, in The Luther Genealogy, claims there may have been a second child, but I have found no evidence to support that10.

JOHN ANTHONY – There is some evidence that a son, John, was born 10 Jan 1738/39. Charles L. Anthony lists John as the son of Job & Hannah Luther, born 173811, but according to Job Anthony’s divorce petition to the Governor of Mass. at Boston, 20 Sep 1740, Job claims he is not the father of John. It’s stated in the petition: “[Hanna] Has Sundry Times been seen in Bed with several other men was drefts in an Immodest & unseemly Posture, and by her unlawful adulterous Communion with some of them, has begotten with child, of which she was Delivered on y’ 10th of Jan’ry 1738, near three years after your Pet’r had wholly abstained from her Embraces as afores’d, so that it is impofsible in nature For Child should be his”12. After the divorce, Hannah went on to marry her 3rd cousin, John Luther, and had 9 children13. Regardless, John used the surname of Anthony.

John is mentioned in Job’s will, last, as his “Reputed Son”14. Apparently Job felt some responsibility, but he would not claim John as his legitimate son.

Job Anthony and his second wife, Bethiah Eddy

Job married second, Bethiah Eddy at Swansea, 23 Feb 174015. Bethiah is the daughter of Caleb and Bethiah Eddy16.

They appear to have had two children before the early death of Bethiah, ca. 1743. Caleb Eddy left a will, probated 5 Jan 1748, that states “dau. Bethiah Anthony, late wife of Job Anthony and her two children, Eunice and Job”17.

JOB ANTHONY – Charles L. Anthony lists a Job Anthony, born 174_18. Job is the first son is mentioned in his father’s will, indicating he may have been the older son19. Both Charles L. Anthony and John Gould Anthony, list a Job Jr. born to Job’s third wife, Abigail, but there is no evidence to support this. It appears to be a duplication of names. Much of Charles’ information on Job’s family came from John Gould Anthony’s research. No record was found of a Job Jr., born to Job and Abigail Bush. An 1887 letter from James H. Anthony, James states that Job had four sons,” Seth Paul, Edmond, the other I don’t remember”20. The aforementioned James H. Anthony was the son of Edmond Anthony and the grandson of Job Sr. and his third wife, Abigail. Job may have been the 4th son he couldn’t remember, especially since Job Sr. (his uncle) and Edmond (his father) had different mothers. Job was probably born in 1740 or 1741 after Job Sr. and Bethiah were married and before their second child, Eunice, was born.

EUNICE ANTHONY – Swansea vital records show Eunice, born 2 Aug 174221. Charles L. Anthony lists a Eunice, born to Job & Bethiah. Although Charles has the correct mother, the year is incorrect since Bethiah probably died before 1745. As we see later, this sets off a chain of incorrect birth dates for the remainder of Job’s children. There are no other records for this Eunice. She probably died young since the name Eunice was used again by Job and his third wife Abigail Bush.

Job Anthony and his third wife, Abigail Bush

Job married third, Abigail Chase Bush22, a widow, between 1744 and 1745. This can be only be determined by the fact that Job would have married Abigail after the death of Bethiah and before the birth of their first child, Lois, about 1745. Abigail was the daughter of Nathan Chace23. According to probate records, Abigail died before 3 Jun 180024. The Swansey Record of Friends shows her date of death as 19 Aug25, so she probably died in 1799. They had eight children between 1745 and 1765.

Job was listed in the Taunton, Mass. 1757 Alarm list of the Fifth Company of Foot Soldiers for the French and Indian War, so he must have lived in Taunton at that time26.

LOIS ANTHONY – There is no record of the date of birth of Lois Anthony, but she is probably born about 1745, the first child of Job and Abigail as she was the first to be married. She was married to Moses Davis, 11 Nov 176227. If Lois was born in 1745, she would have been age 17 when she married Moses Davis. Lois, wife of Moses, died on 30 Jan 1783 according to Swansey Friends Records28. Lois is listed in Job Anthony’s 1794 will, as deceased, after he named his living children29. Charles L. Anthony lists Lois as being born in 1757 as the third daughter of Job and Abigail30. This would indicate Lois was age 12 when she married. This same discrepancy is found in Charles L. Anthony’s manuscript for several of Job and Abigail’s children. It appears the author started with a known birthdate and arbitrarily assigned names and birthdates, not taking into account or consulting the marriage dates mentioned in the Rhode Island Vital records31. John Gould Anthony did not list a birthdate for Lois, only that she married Moses Davis32.

RACHEL ANTHONY – There is no record of the date of birth of Rachel Anthony, but she is probably born about 1747, the second child of Job and Abigail as she was the second to be married. She was married to Aaron Davis, 19 Apr 176433. If Rachel was born in 1747, she would have been age 17 when she married Aaron Davis. We do not know her date of death but she is mentioned along with Aaron and one child in Job’s will, so we know she was living in 179434. Charles L. Anthony lists her birthdate as 175935, which again is incorrect. John Gould Anthony did not list a birthdate for Rachel, only that she married Aaron Davis36.

SETH ANTHONY – There is no record of the date of birth of Seth Anthony. His birthdate can be estimated to be between 1748 and 1754. He was a resident of Taunton, MA and he married Charity Haskins in Berkeley, Mass. on 22 Jun 177537. He would have been between age 21 and 27 at that time. The 1790 Harpersfield Town, NY census list Seth as the Head of Family and over age 1638. Job’s will lists Seth as his second son39. In the 1800 Kortright, NY census, Seth was listed as “45 and over” placing his birthdate before 175540. According to tax records, Seth moved from Massachusetts to Delaware County, NY around 178741. Seth died 20 Sep 182742. Charles L. Anthony lists his birthdate as 176743, which is incorrect as Seth would only have been 8 years old when he married Charity Haskins. There was also a Seth Anthony born to Isaac Anthony (Job’s brother) and Hanna Slocum in 1767 which may have added to the confusion44. John Gould Anthony did not provide a birthdate. James H. Anthony listed Seth as his uncle, but no dates45.

PAUL ANTHONY – There is no record of the date of birth of Paul Anthony, but his birthdate can be estimated to be between 1750 and 1755. He was married to Elizabeth Chase, 31 Dec 177846. He would have been between age 23 and 28 when he married Elizabeth. Paul was listed as “45 and over” in the 1800 Greenfield, NY census47, placing his date of birth before 1755. Paul is listed in Job’s will as his 3rd son48, so he was likely born after Seth. He is mentioned by James H. Anthony as one of his uncles49. His date of death is listed as 7 Oct 1841 according to a reference on Find A Grave, where he is buried with his wife at the Quaker Cemetery, Jefferson County, NY50. Charles L. Anthony lists his birthdate as 1761, which is incorrect51. John Gould Anthony did not list a birthdate for Paul, only that he married Elizabeth Chace in December 177852.

EUNICE ANTHONY – Rhode Island Vital Extracts show Eunice was born 5 Mar 1753 and died on 6 May 1838 53. She was married to Obadiah Chace, 15 Dec 177454. Eunice was age 21 when she married Obadiah. She is mentioned as the second living daughter (after Rachel) in Job’s will55. She is also mentioned in her mother Abigail’s probate papers as the wife of Obadiah Chace, Abigail’s executor56. She is buried in the Friend’s cemetery in Somerset, Bristol County, Mass. The inscription on her headstone reads “Eunice Anthony wife of Obadiah Chace 1753-1838″57. Charles L. Anthony and John Gould Anthony both correctly list her birthdate as 5 Mar 1753, her marriage to Obadiah Chace, and her death on 6 May 1838. John Gould Anthony also lists her first child Sarah, born 15 Oct 177558. James H. Anthony lists Eunice as his aunt59.

LYDIA ANTHONY – Rhode Island Vital Extracts show Lydia was born in Taunton on 22 Mar 1755, died on 1 Jul 1789, and is buried in the Friends Yard, Swansea, Mass.60. She is mentioned as the second deceased daughter (after Lois) in Job’s will.61. She was married to Nathan Chace, 22 Oct 177762. Lydia was age 22 when she married Nathan. Charles L. Anthony and John Gould Anthony both correctly list her birthdate as 22 Mar 1755, her marriage to Nathan Chace, and her death on 1 Jul 1789. John Gould Anthony also lists her first child Abigail, born 25 Sep 177863. James H. Anthony lists Lydia as his aunt64.

EDMOND ANTHONY – According to Edmond’s son, James H. Anthony, he was born in 1760, married Jemima Hoxie of Sandwich in 1793, and died in 182165. Taunton death records show he died in July 182166. He is buried at Assonet Friends cemetery, Freetown, Bristol County, Mass. The inscription states that he died “7th Mo. 27 1821 Age 60 years”67. Edmond is listed as the last living son and the executor of Job’s will in Taunton68. Edmond was also designated the successor executor of Abigail’s will after Obediah Chace died before completion of probate, also in Taunton69. Edmond is listed as head of household in the 1800 census for Taunton, Mass as male 26 thru 4470. In the 1810 census, he is listed as male over 4571. Therefore we can confirm his birthdate between 1756 and 1765. Charles L. Anthony lists Edmond as born in 1770 which is incorrect, but lists his year of death and marriage to Jemima Hoxie correctly72. John Gould Anthony lists Edmond’s mother as Bethiah Eddy which is incorrect, but lists his first child, Apollo, born 1 Aug 1794 which is consistent with his marriage date73. James H. Anthony listed Edmond as his uncle74. Edmond is not included in the Friends records of Swansea as are his older siblings.

TRYPHENA ANTHONY – There is no record of the date of birth of Tryphena Anthony, but her birthdate can be estimated to be between 1758 and 1765. It is possible she was born before Edmond Anthony. She was married to Noah Edmister in Berkeley, Mass. 18 Jul 179375. This places her marriage age between 28 and 35. She is mentioned as the last living daughter as Tryphena Edmister in Job’s will76. Her date of death is unknown, but she listed as a beneficiary of Abigail’s will, so she was alive in 180077. Charles L. Anthony list her date of birth as 1765 and married to Noah Edminster (sp)78. John Gould Anthony lists her as Job and Abigail’s last child, married to Edmister, but no dates79. James H. Anthony lists ‘Trephena’ as his aunt80. Tryphena is not included in the Friends records of Swansea as are her older siblings (except Seth and Edmond).

DNA Evidence

Autosomal DNA evidence suggests a relationship between Seth Anthony and his father Job Anthony.

DNA analysis predicts that Seth Anthony is the nephew of Alice Anthony, a sister of Job Anthony. This was determined by comparing the autosomal DNA between my mother, Alice Joanne, a descendant of Job Anthony, and William Lane Morgan, a descendant of Alice Anthony. Their common ancestor is William Anthony & Mary Coggeshall, Seth & Alice Anthony’s parents. William Lane Morgan would be Alice Joanne’s 7th cousin (1x removed). Found on AncestryDNA, they have 8.7cM shared across 1 DNA segment81.

Genealogical Summary

Based on the research Job’s children were most likely born as follows:

Child of Job Anthony and Hannah (Luther) Anthony, born probably Swansea, Mass:

  1. John Anthony, b. 10 Jan 1738; d. after 1794; Job did not believe his “reputed son” John was his child, but he apparently felt some responsibility and requested in his will that two shilling to be paid to John within twenty years after Job’s death.

Children of Job Anthony and Bethiah (Eddy) Anthony, born probably Swansea, Mass:

  1. Job Anthony, b. 1740-1741; d. after 1794.
  2. Eunice Anthony, b. 2 Aug 1742; d. probably very young as name was used again in 1753.

Children of Job Anthony and Abigail (Bush) Anthony, born Swansea and Taunton, Mass:

  1. Lois Anthony, b. ca 1745; d. 30 Jan 1783; m.11 Nov 1762 to Moses Davis.
  2. Rachel Anthony, b. ca 1747; d. aft 1794; m. 19 Apr 1764 to Aaron Davis.
  3. Seth Anthony, b. 1748-1754; d. 20 Sep 1827; m. in Berkeley, Mass. 22 Jun 1775 to Charity Haskins.
  4. Paul Anthony, b. 1750-1755; d. 7 Oct 1841; m. 31 Dec 1778 to Elizabeth Chace.
  5. Eunice Anthony, b. 5 Mar 1753; d. 6 May 1838; m. 15 Dec 1774 to Obadiah Chace.
  6. Lydia Anthony, b. 22 Mar 1755; d. 1 Jul 1789; m. 22 Oct 1777 to Nathan Chace.
  7. Edmond Anthony, b. 1760; d. 1821; m. 1793 to Jemima Hoxie.
  8. Tryphena Anthony, b. 1759-1765; d. unk; m. 18 Jul 1793 to Noah Edmister.

We find this arrangement very logical and supported by the known records:

  • The order of children’s names listed in Job’s will by sons, daughters, deceased daughters, and his “reputed” son (Job, Seth, Paul, Edmond, Rachel, Eunice, Tryphany, John)82.
  • The order of children in James H. Anthony’s letter (daughters: Eunice, Lydia, Tryphena, Lois; sons: Seth, Paul, Edmond, 4th unnamed). Only Lois is out of order, but James states that only “the first 3 had children”. He also didn’t mention Rachel for reasons unknown. James does state in his letter “I do not remember but few dates I will give you what I have as I have heard this as near as I can”83.
  • The dates of marriage for several of Job’s children are documented in the vital records of Rhode Island, helping us determine the order of their marriage and their approximate dates of their birth.
  • As previously stated, John Gould Anthony was just starting his research on the Anthony Family and died within a few months of the beginning of his work, therefore his records are limited to what was known at the time.
  • It appears Charles L. Anthony used the earliest known birthdate (Eunice – 1753), then simply lined up the children starting with Eunice and arbitrarily assigned years to all the others, generally skipping two years between them with the exception of Edmond who comes three years after Seth. We know these dates are incorrect based on marriage dates and the birth dates of their children.
  • Job’s marriages and details of his children are supported by the manuscripts of the Anthony Family84, the Luther Family85, and the Eddy Family86.
  • Job’s divorce petition identifies Job’s first wife Hannah Luther, and their son who Job clearly states is not his son87.
  • All of the children are listed in Friend’s records except for Edmond and Tryphena. The records of the Swanzey Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends mention that Seth Anthony, a son of Job Anthony, married Charity Haskins who was a non-member, so Seth was disowned by the Quakers July 3, 177588. Edmond and Tryphena were the younger children and may not have been involved with the Quaker church.
  • Job and his wives lived in Swansea, and Taunton, Mass. We know his first two marriages took place in Swansea, and possibly his third marriage. Therefore most of his older children were probably born in Swansea. Job is listed on the 1757 Alarm list of the Fifth Company of Foot Soldiers in Taunton, Mass., so Edmond and Tryphena were likely born in Taunton. Job and Abigail Bush both died in Taunton according to their probate records.
  • Autosomal DNA shows a shared DNA segment between distant cousins related to the Job and Seth Anthony.
