Seth Anthony and Charity Haskins

The webpage, Job Anthony (1714-1797), identifies Seth Anthony as son of Job and Abigail Anthony. Here we attempt to accurately identify Seth Anthony’s immediate family.

Seth Anthony’s exact birthdate has not been determined, but he was probably born in Swansea, Mass. and his birthdate can be estimated to be between 1748 and 17541.

Massachusetts Vital Records show that Seth Anthony and Charity Haskins, who lived in Taunton, were married 22 June, 1775 in Berkeley, MA, a smaller town about five miles south of Taunton2. Seth’s family probably moved from Swansea to Taunton before 1757 since his father, Job, was on the Taunton Alarm list of the Fifth Company of Foot Soldiers at that time.3. Charity grew up in Taunton and probably met Seth there. Taunton is about 14 miles from Swansea. He would have been between age 21 and 27 at the time of their marriage. Seth’s marriage to Charity Haskins can be confirmed by a deed dated July 2, 1823 stating “I Charity Anthony wife of the within named Seth Anthony…”4.

In an 1874 manuscript authored by Ebenezer Weaver Peirce on the Haskins Family, he states that Charity Haskins, daughter of Abiel Haskins, was born in or about 1754, and married Seth Anthony5. Her father, Abiel, a blacksmith, lived in East Taunton, near Myrickville6. Charity Haskins would have been age 21 when she married Seth. According to Peirce, most of the Haskins family at that time resided in the Taunton/Berkeley area of MA. This could explain why they were married in Berkeley rather than where they lived in Taunton in 1775.

The Peirce manuscript, page 148, originally states that Charity Haskins was married to Paul Anthony7. But later in pages 166-168, the author states that he was mistaken and that Charity Haskins married Seth Anthony instead of Paul Anthony. He goes on to say “They moved to Kortwright in the state of New York, where he appears to have become poor; he and his wife separated, remaining apart till his last sickness, that terminated in death Sept. 20, 1827.” Peirce admits that he was misled by tradition and goes on to explain that he sought the assistance of Lydia Haskins of Myrickville, whose husband’s father was Charity Haskins’ brother. Lydia Haskins produced a package of old letters that convinced the Peirce that Seth Anthony was married to Charity Haskins. Peirce states on page 168, “The perusal of these letters convinced me that Seth Anthony and wife had quite a number of children that lived to marry and be comfortably settled in life, but did not give their names with the clearness that would enable me to arrange them in order of their births, and hence we forbear to attempt the furnishing of further particulars concerning them”.

Seth’s parents and many of his siblings were Quakers.8. But Seth was disowned by the Quakers shortly after his marriage to Charity. The records of the Swanzey Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, dated 3 July 1775, states: “Freetown preparative meeting informs that Seth Anthony hath Married out of the Unity of Friends and hath been sufficiently Laboured with therefore this meeting doth put him from under our care”9. Although he was of the correct age, there is no record of Seth fighting in the Revolutionary War. Probably because he was originally a Quaker, and Quakers were exempt from the fighting in the war.

Seth and his family moved to Delaware County, New York between 1786 and 1788. Seth is not in the assessment list for the Old English District which then included Delaware County. However the list for assessments generated by a law passed in October 1788 and filed in 1789 for Harpersfield District, then including Delaware County, lists “Zythe” Anthony with a personal tax of 4 pounds.10.

In Seth’s fathers will, proved in Taunton 6 Jun 1797, Seth was bequeathed ten acres of land in Freetown, Mass. and was forgiven a promissory note issued 8 April 178911. No records have been found showing the disposition of this land.

A deed dated April 26, 1799 identifies Seth as a Kortright land lessor when he subleased 2.5 acres to his son, Seth Jr.12. Seth may have leased the land as early as 1797 when Delaware County was formed from Ostego and Ulster Counties.13. Seth lived in that part taken from Ostego County which had been formed from Montgomery County in 1791. The land was originally purchased by John Harper and others from the Indians in 1768. They obtained letters patent from King George III of England. The Harper patent contained one hundred thousand acres. Its proprietors deeded to Lawrence Kortright twenty-two thousand acres. This patent was surveyed by William Cockburn, in 1770, and divided up into lots or farms of one hundred and fifty acres each. The proprietor offered his farms free of rent for five years, and for sixpence sterling per acre rent each year forever thereafter. Most of the farms were taken on these terms14. Seth took advantage of this opportunity leasing a 150 acre parcel from John Kortright15. John Kortright was the only son of Lawrence Kortright.16. The town of Kortright was formed from Harpersfield on March 12th, 1793.17. According to the 1799 Deed between Seth and Seth Jr., Seth Jr. paid $20 consideration for the 2.5 acres and agreed to pay the “yearly rent of six pence sterling of great Britain in lawful money of New York for each and every acre of land”18.

A tax assessment record for Seth Anthony in Kortright, Delaware County, New York dated 18 Sep 1799 shows Seth as a land owner/lessor with land value of $369 and personal property of $9619.

A tax assessment record for Seth Anthony in Kortright, Delaware County, New York dated 16 Jul 1800 shows Seth as a land owner/lessor with land value of $400 and personal property of $86. It also shows Seth Jr. with land value of $70 and personal property of $1020.

A tax assessment record for Seth Anthony in Kortright, Delaware County, New York dated 2 Jun 1803 shows Seth as a land owner/lessor with land value of $173 and personal property of $86. It also shows Seth Jr. with land value of $4 and personal property of $26. Lastly, it shows John Anthony, Seth’s younger son, to have a land value of $65 and personal property of $3021.

A lease payment receipt dated 7 May 1810 shows a 6 pound 13 Shillings and 4 pence annual payment from Seth to John Kortright for Lot No. 12522.

Lease payment receipt – Seth Anthony -> John Kortright

Seth’s land was sold to Samuel Rowland July 2, 1823 for $1,000. The sale excluded the 2.5 acres leased by Seth Anthony Jr. Charity Anthony, apparently separated from Seth at that time, signed off on the sale after receiving $10023. Three years later Seth Anthony was listed as the debtor in an insolvency lawsuit filed by Thomas Farrington in Delaware County, New York on 30 Oct 1826. He was “confined in custody of the sheriff of said county for more than thirty days past on an execution in favor of Thomas Farrington for four dollars and ninety three cents in closing costs”24. The document confirms that Seth provided for his family in Delaware County. Seth would have been between the ages of 72 and 78 at that time. This seems to confirm Peirce’s theory that “he appears to have become poor; he and his wife separated, remaining apart till his last sickness”.

Seth Anthony can be found in the US census listings in the town of Kortright for census years’ 1790, 1800, 1810 and 1820. The 1790-1820 census shows that Seth indeed had several children. Unfortunately, census records prior to 1850 didn’t show the names of household members.

Children of Seth and Charity Anthony

The following are possible children of Seth and Charity Anthony based on currently available records. There is very little “direct evidence” proving the proposed relationships, but there is substantial “indirect evidence” suggesting the identification of the children of Seth and Charity Anthony. The following evidence showing the timeline of births, birth locations, marriage, geographical relocations, and family size & makeup, all suggest a high probability that Seth and Charity are the parents of the following children:

SETH ANTHONY, JR. – Born 1776, probably in Taunton, Mass. As discussed above, Seth Anthony Jr. was leasing land and paying taxes on real estate and personal property in Kortright, New York25. Seth Anthony sold the 2.5 acres of land he leased from his father in 1799 to Martin Keeler for $125, recorded 8 Apr 182426. Seth Jr. was listed as a head of household in the 1800 US Census27 for Kortright immediately below Seth Anthony as a free white male 16-25. He was listed as a head of household in the 1810 US Census28 for Kortright immediately above Seth Anthony as a free white male 26-44. He was listed as a head of household in the 1820 US Census29 for Kortright on the same page as Seth Anthony as a free white male over 45. These census records indicate Seth Jr. was probably born in early 1776 and was married and had children by 1800. The names of his wife and children are unknown.

LOIS ANTHONY – Born in 1777, probably born in Taunton, Mass. and died in Kortright, New York in 186130. In the Seth Anthony Family Group Record of FamilySearch.com, Lois Anthony was listed, along with John Anthony, as a child of Seth Anthony and Charity Haskins31. It lists her birth date as 1777 and marriage to Eli Roberts in 1799. Eli was born in 1778 and died in Kortright in 186432. In the 1820 US census33 for Kortright, Eli Roberts is listed immediately below Seth Anthony as a free white male 26-44. In the 1855 NY census34, Lois is listed as the wife of Eli, age 76, being a resident of Kortright for 52 years (since 1803). In 1850 US census for Kortright35, Lois is listed as age 73, and in 1860 US census36 for Kortright, she is listed as age 83. Although the 1850 US and 1855 NY census lists her place of birth as New York and Connecticut respectively, the 1860 US census indicates she was born in Massachusetts. Eli and Lois apparently had only one son, William Glover Roberts, born 25 Feb 1822. He married Amanda C. Bramley on 11 Jan 1847, and died 24 Oct, 186737.

JOHN ANTHONY – Born 13 Nov 1780 in Taunton, Mass. and died at Buffalo, near Polo, Ogle County, Ill. on 31 Jan 1857. He married 12 Nov 1801 at Blenheim, Schoharie County, New York, Abigail Soule38. Abigail was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island on 4 Jul 1782 and died 12 Jul 1859 in Jackson Township, Linn County, Iowa. Abigail was the daughter of Jacob and Meribah (Lewis) Soule and a descendent of George Soule, a Mayflower passenger39. We are descended from John Anthony.

Family genealogist Mildred C. Mathews, spent much of her later life documenting the Anthony family history. She published the John Anthony family connection to George Soule of the mayflower in the Soule Kindred Newsletter in 1973.40. The Mathews newsletter article states that Seth Anthony and Charity Haskins were the parents of John Anthony. This, and a subsequent Soule Kindred Newsletter article by Mildred Mathews in 1977,41 has been accepted as evidence for General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) membership42.

A September 9, 1974 letter to her cousins Nellie [Burns], Alice [Davis], and Lena [Davis], Mildred Mathews stating the following in paragraph three43: “I knew that Job Anthony lived at Taunton [Mass.] for many years; his son, Seth, grew up there, and married Charity Haskins, and their children, including our John Anthony, were born there. Seth and Charity moved their family to Delaware County, New York, 1786/88 (according to the tax records), which was shortly after the Revolutionary War.” And in paragraph four she wrote: “In the meantime, the Soules, Jacob & Maribah [Abigail Soule’s parents] and their family had moved to Blenheim, Schoharie County, New York, and so John Anthony and Abigail Soule got together. Years later, about 1832, John and Abigail, moved to Broome County, the little town of Sanford—“

Bible pages from the bible for John and Abigail Soules Anthony family confirm the birth, death and marriage dates of John and Abigail as well as their children44.

A tax assessment record for John Anthony in Kortright, Delaware County, New York dated 2 Jun 1803 shows John as a land owner/lessor with land value of $65 and personal property of $3045.

In the 1810 US census46 for Kortright, John Anthony is listed two lines below Seth Anthony as a free white male 26-44. Abigail (26-44) and five children are indicated, all under age 10. In the 1820 US census 47 for Kortright, John Anthony is listed as a free white male 26-44 in the town of Meredith, just a few miles west of Kortright. Abigail (26-44) and all eleven children of John and Abigail are indicated. In the 1830 US census48 for Kortright, John Anthony is listed as a free white male 50-59. Abigail (40-49) and four children of John and Abigail are indicated. In the 1840 US census49 for Sanford, John Anthony is listed one name from his oldest son, Lewis R. Anthony, as a free white male 50-59. Abigail (50-60) and two children are indicated. This confirms his move to Sanford in the 1830s. In the 1850 US Census50 for Sanford, John is listed age 71 as a farmer, born in Massachusetts with Real estate appraised at $1400. Abigail is listed age 69, born in Massachusetts. Their youngest son, John A. Anthony, is listed as a carpenter, age 29, born in New York. They are also boarding John and Abigail’s grandson, Wm. R. Freeman, age 14. In the 1850 U.S Census Non-Population Schedule51, John is listed one line from his youngest son, John A. Anthony, as a farmer, owning 40 acres of improved land, raising livestock and growing produce. In the 1855 NY census52 for Sanford, John is listed one line from his youngest son, John A. Anthony, as a farmer, age 75, born in Mass. Abigail is listed as his wife, age 73, born in Rhode Island. Both John and Abigail are listed as 23 year residents of Sanford, indicating they moved to Sanford in 1832.

John and Abigail Anthony moved from Sanford, New York to Buffalo, Ogle County, Ill. in December 1856. John died there on 31 Jan 185753. Abigail died of “Fits” in Linn County, Iowa, 12 July 185954.

The most compelling evidence found tying John Anthony to his father Seth, is a handwritten letter by his son, John A. Anthony to his niece, Helen (Aplington) Burns in March 9, 1894 from Ruthven, Iowa55. In this letter John A. Anthony states “I am nearly Seventy Six years old” and “You Enquire the name of my grandfather I think his name was Seth. He was from Taunton Massachusetts. He and all the Anthony’s there were Quakers, and were natives of new England States.” He adds a post script, “Why did you want to know the name of my grandfather. Is there one by the name of Anthony in your place.”

MARY (POLLY) ANTHONY – Born ca. 1781/1782, probably born in Taunton, Mass. and died in Sanford, Broome County, New York on 28 Feb 1869. She married ca. 1803, John Roberts, born ca. 1782 in Bedford, Westchester County, NY, died at Sanford 10 Mar 1868. In the 1855 NY census for Kortright56, John and Polly Roberts are each listed age 73 as mother-in-law and father-in-law. John Roberts is listed as being born in Westchester and resident of Kortright for 48 years (since 1807), and Polly as being born in Mass. and resident of Kortright for 64 years (since 1791). There are no records of John Roberts and Mary (Polly) Anthony having children. There are headstones in the Sanford Cemetery, Broome County, N.Y. cemetery with the inscription “Polly Roberts Died Feb. 28, 1869 Aged 88 years”57, and “John Roberts Died MAR. 10, 1868 Aged 87 years”58.

LYDIA ANTHONY – Born ca. 1793 in Kortright, Delaware County, N.Y. and died in Delaware County 9 Oct 1878. In the 1850 US census59, Lydia is listed at age 57 along with her sister Prudence Anthony, age 55, in Prudence’s husband, Noah Dibble’s household. In the 1855 NY census60, Lydia is listed at age 64 along with Prudence Anthony, age 59, also indicating Lydia is Noah Dibble’s sister-in-law. In the 1860 US census61, Lydia is listed at age 66 along with Prudence Anthony, age 64, confirming their birthplace in New York. In the 1865 NY census62, Lydia is listed at age 71 along with Prudence Anthony, age 69 indicating again Lydia is Noah Dibble’s sister-in-law, that she is single, and was born in Delaware County. In the 1870 US census63, Lydia is listed at age 76 along with Prudence Anthony, age 74, listing her as a housekeeper. In the 1875 NY Census64, Lydia is listed as a boarder age 79. There is no record of Lydia ever marrying or having children. Lydia Anthony’s gravestone is found in the Coventar Cemetery (aka Doonans Corner Cemetery) in Kortright Center, Delaware County65. The inscription indicates she died 9 Oct 1878 at age 86 ys, making her year of birth 1792 or 1793. Her sister, Prudence (Anthony) Dibble and family are buried in the same cemetery.

PRUDENCE ANTHONY – Born 4 Mar 1796 in Kortright, Delaware County, N.Y. and died there 20 Mar 1889. She married ca. 1815, Noah Dibble, born 4 Apr 1791, died at Kortright 10 Oct 1872. In the 1820 US census66 for Kortright, N.Y., Noah Dibble is listed as a farmer age 26-44 one house away from Eli Roberts (Lois Anthony’s husband) and two houses away from Seth Anthony. A female (probably Prudence) is indicated age 26-44 with one child under 10. In the 1830 U.S census67 for Kortright, N.Y., Noah Dibble is listed age 30-40 with a female, age 30-40, and five children under age 20. In the 1850 US Census68 for Kortright, Prudence Dibble is listed as age 55 along with her sister, Lydia Anthony, age 57, along with four children ages 21-33. The 1855 NY State census69 for Kortright lists Prudence, age 59, as having lived in Kortright all of her life (59 years). Noah, Lydia and one son, George Dibble, age 24, are also listed. The 1860 US census70 for Kortright lists Noah, age 68, Prudence, age 64 and Lydia, age 66. The 1865 NY State census71 lists Prudence, age 69, Noah, age 73, Lydia, age 71, along with several younger household members. The 1870 US census72 for Kortright lists Noah, age 78, Prudence, age 74 and Lydia, age 76, along with several younger household members. The 1880 US Census73 lists Prudence Dibble, age 85, in the household of her son, George Dibble. Most importantly, it lists both of Prudence’s parent’s place of birth as Massachusetts. Prudence Dibble gravestone was also found in Coventar Cemetery74. The inscription indicates she died on March 12, 1889 at age 93 yrs 16 D’s, making her date of birth 4 Mar 1796.

Census data

Assuming these are the children of Seth and Charity Anthony, we can look more closely at the 1790-1820 US census data and make some determinations as to the possible identification of some of the household members.

1790 US Census, Harpersfield, Montgomery County, New York75

1 Males 16+ Seth (36-42)
2 Males < 16 Seth Jr./ John
6 Females(total) Charity/ Lois/ Mary/ 3 unknown

1800 US Census, Kortright, Delaware County, New York76 – Seth Sr. and Seth Jr. (age 24) were the heads of different households. Seth Jr.’s household is listed next to Seth Sr.

1 Males 16-25 John (20)
1 Males 45+ Seth (46-52)
2 Females <10 Lydia (7)/ Prudence (4)
3 Females 10-15 3 unknown
1 Females 26-44 Charity (46)

1810 US Census, Kortright, Delaware County, New York77 – Seth Sr., Seth Jr. (age 31), and John Anthony (age 30) were the heads of different households.

2 Males 45+ Seth (56-62)
3 Females 16-25 Lydia (17)/ Prudence (14)/ 2 unknown
1 Females 45+ Charity (56)

1820 US Census, Kortright, Delaware County, New York78 – Seth Sr., Seth Jr. (age 41), and John Anthony (age 40) were the heads of different households. Prudence (age 24) and Noah Dibble were married and lived two doors down from Seth Sr. The presence of a female over 45 indicates that the separation between Seth and Charity had not taken place by 1820.

1 Males 10-15 possibly a grandchild
1 Males 45+ Seth (66-72)
1 Females <10 possibly a grandchild
1 Females 16-25 unknown
1 Females 45+ Charity (66)

There is a noticeable gap in births of identified possible children of Seth and Charity between 1782 and 1793. This is consistent with what is found in the census records. It appears Seth and Charity had at least two additional daughters between 1785 and 1790. Nothing is known about these additional children except the census records:

There are two additional gravestones found in the Coventar Cemetery79. The first is for Charity Anthony. The inscription indicates she died 12 Mar 1847 at age 50 ys, making her year of birth 1797. This individual fits as the unknown female in the 1820 census, but unfortunately doesn’t square with the 1800 or 1810 census. Names were often passed down from parents to children in the 1800s. John Anthony also had a daughter named Charity Anthony. So it is likely the Charity Anthony found at Coventar Cemetery is related to the family. The other gravestone at Coventar Cemetery has the surname Anthony, but no other legible information.

DNA Evidence

Autosomal DNA evidence suggests a relationship between Seth Anthony and his father Job Anthony80.

Seth & Job Anthony – The DNA analysis predicts that Seth Anthony is the nephew of Alice Anthony, a sister of Job Anthony. This was determined by comparing the autosomal DNA between a known descendant of John Anthony, and a descendant of Alice Anthony. The match shows they are 7th cousins (1x removed) and they have 8.7cM shared across 1 DNA segment.

Genealogical Summary

Possible children of Seth Anthony and Charity (Haskins) Anthony:

  1. Seth ANTHONY, jr., born probably Taunton, MA ca. 1776; died after 1820; married unknown.
  2. Lois ANTHONY, born probably Taunton, MA ca. 1777; died in Kortright, NY 1861; married 1799 to Eli Roberts.
  3. John ANTHONY, born Taunton, MA 13 Nov 1780; died at Buffalo, near Polo, Ogle County, IL 31 Jan 1857; married at Blenheim, Schoharie County, NY 12 Nov 1801, Abigail Soule.
  4. Mary (Polly) ANTHONY, born probably Taunton, MA ca. 1781/1782; died in Sanford, Broome County, NY 28 Feb 1869; married ca. 1803, John Roberts.
  5. Unknown ANTHONY, female born probably Kortright, Delaware County, NY between 1785-1790.
  6. Unknown ANTHONY, female born probably Kortright, Delaware County, NY between 1785-1790.
  7. Lydia ANTHONY, born Kortright, Delaware County, NY ca. 1793; died in Delaware County, NY 9 Oct 1878.
  8. Prudence ANTHONY, born in Kortright, Delaware County, NY 4 Mar 1796; died Kortright, Delaware County, NY 20 Mar 1889; married ca. 1815, Noah Dibble.

We find this arrangement very logical and supported by the known records:

  • Kortright had a population of only 2,548 in 1820 81. That is a very small population so it is likely the Anthony individuals were all related.
  • Genealogist Mildred Mathew’s statement82 that Seth grew up in Taunton, married in Berkeley, and moved later to Delaware County, New York is consistent with the geographical information on the marriage, tax, and census records.
  • The Pierce manuscript83 confirms the marriage of Seth and Charity in Massachusetts, their subsequent move to Kortright, and that they had a “quite a number of children.”
  • Based on census records, Prudence (Anthony) Dibble & Lydia Anthony are sisters.
  • Based on tax records, land records, census records, and family letters, we can be confident that Seth Jr. and John are children of Seth and Charity Anthony.
  • Although there is no direct evidence that Seth and Charity Anthony are the parents of any of the other children, there is significant indirect evidence based on the timeline of births, birth locations, marriage, geographical relocations, and family size & makeup. These suggest a high probability that Lois, Polly, Lydia, and Prudence Anthony are children of Seth and Charity Anthony.
  • Autosomal DNA shows a reasonable amount of shared DNA between distant cousins related to the John and Seth Anthony.
